Gates
George Gates was born in England about 1634 and came to Hartford at about the age of seventeen under the care of Captain Nicholas Olmsted. He moved to Haddam on the west bank of the Connecticut River where he was one of the initial 28 settlers and a leader in town affairs. He later moved east of the river and helped establish the town of East Haddam. He was an active member of the Congregational Church, representative to the Connecticut General Assembly, town clerk, and captain of the militia. He outlived all the other original Haddam settlers, dying on November 12, 1724, at the age of 90.
