At the age of 20 in 1776, he entered the military in the Commissary Department under Commissary-General Joseph Trumbull. After Sept. 1777, he was under the immediate control of Deputy Commissary General Peter Colt. In Feb. he was transferred to the Purchasing Department, where he remained until he resigned 1780/01/22. Captain in E.H. Militia 1784-93, Major 1793-95, Lieut. Col. 1795-98. Commissioned Brig. Gen. of 7th Brigade 1800-03. He was a U.S. Congressman from C.T. from 1807/03/04 to 1817/03/03.
