Born in East Haddam. Family moved in 1770 Canaan, NY. Scouting for General Schuyler involved him in skirmishes with the advancing parties from General Burgoyne's army until Burgoyne's surrender in October of 1777 at Saratoga, N.Y. In September, he marched with Captain Jonathan Olmstead's Company to Fishkill, serving 2 months.
