He was a boy of 13 when attending the school in East Haddam taught by Nathan Hale. He was thrown into such close company with his teacher, who boarded at is home, that soon after the execution of his former teacher, he went into the service and never returned. He was a crew member on the ship-of-war "Oliver Cromwell" He was taken prisoner and committed to Forton Prison in England. He was then sent back to America when he drowned in Wallabout Bay while trying to escape from the prison ship "Jersey" or "Good Hope".
