He had experience in the Merchant Service, superintended the construction of several vessels, and received a commission in 1776 from President John Hancock. He was Captain of the brig. "Despatch", sailing from Salem, MA to Bordeaux, France, returning with a valuable cargo of munitions of war, arriving safely at Townsend, ME.
